A Brewery Co-op
Ovinnik Brewing & For the Culture Brewing create a truly unique Craft experience
There is a new brewery concept in Houston and we think it is pretty cool. Two breweries, one location: A Brewery Co-op that looks to shake things up. We highly recommend a visit.
Ovinnik Brewing. If you’ve been following the Houston Craft Beer scene for a while you’ll recognize the name and the logo - we had all been watching and waiting! Since pre-covid! Well, the time finally arrived and we’ve had a few chances now to try the beer and chat with the folks behind the scenes. We have been impressed with the offerings so far. Expect classic traditional recipes - both ales and lagers - along with fun stuff thrown in along the way. The brewery is also majority women owned which is, of course, kick-ass.
For The Culture Brewing Company. For the Culture is Houston’s first black owned brewery, which is exciting to see and much needed in a very white craft beer industry! the brewery was founded on a desire for representation and with a vision to foster inclusivity and diversity. We can’t imagine something more desperately needed in todays society. The team behind the brewery has been homebrewing for years and wanted to use their love of craft beer and brewing to foster conversations and representation. Beer is, after all, the best beverage to have deep meaningful discussions over. The Houston Chronicle wrote an excellent piece chronicling the breweries history and vision, we recommend checking it out.

Craft Culture X. Combined, the two breweries form a Co-op known as Craft Culture X. We love how the website says it, so we’ll let it speak for itself:
Craft Culture X is the shared taproom of For The Culture Brewing Company and Ovinnik Brewing, created to pursue our similar vision: bringing craft beer to more people of all colors and genders. Both of us discovered craft beer from separate avenues with the help of people willing to guide us until we found styles we liked and branched out from there. We hope to be that group for others.1
One thing to note: the breweries do not really differentiate which beer is which breweries. We learned that the breweries share a brewer - so the beer is all brewed by the same team. The only factor marking it as Ovinnik vs. For the Culture is the recipe. We did ask and they did seem to have a system for how to tell which was which if you really wanted to know. But we recommend not getting hung up on it - the beer is from Craft Culture X, enjoy it all!
No Roulette: Greater Heights Pub Crawl Instead
Rather than do a Brewery Roulette in this edition we wanted to keep focus on the breweries we already highlighted and expand it a bit more into the neighborhood/district that they reside in. The Greater Heights has become one of the hottest spots for delicious craft beer in Houston. Bounded by 2 excellent craft beer bars we count 5 great brewery options in the quadrant bounded by 610 West/North, I-10 and I-45. Pick 3 or 4 of the 7 and make a crawl of it! Here is the list:
